Choosing how to capture those early newborn days is a big decision. Some parents love the comfort and intimacy of an in-home session, while others prefer the polished, professional feel of a studio shoot.
The truth?
There’s no right or wrong answer—just what works best for you and your little one! Here’s a breakdown of both options, featuring real stories from families who’ve been in your shoes.
The Magic of In-Home Newborn Sessions
For many new mums, home is where they feel most relaxed—especially in those first few weeks postpartum.
That’s exactly why Danielle chose a home session for her baby boy.

“For me, having a newborn shoot at home was so much easier than going to a studio like we did with our firstborn. With a toddler who does not like to sit still it made things less stressful for us as a family as he could come & go as he pleased, was surrounded by his toys & was a lot more comfortable in his home environment. We also didn’t have to worry about getting the whole family packed up & in the car for a certain time which on the depths of postpartum was a relief! We were also able to invite grandparents round who were able to drop in & out as needed which was great. It offered far more flexibility & comfort for everyone!” - Danielle
In-home sessions allow for:
A relaxed, natural feel—capturing your baby in their own space.
Breaks whenever needed—feed, change, or cuddle without feeling rushed.
Less disruption for older children – older siblings have all their own toys and home comforts to feel more relaxed.
Personal touches—photos in the nursery, on your bed, or snuggled on the sofa.
If you want your photos to reflect the everyday magic of parenthood, a home session might be perfect for you!
The Beauty of Studio Newborn Sessions
On the other hand, some families love the idea of a studio session for a more styled, timeless look.
Jessica, who came in for a newborn shoot with her 2 daughters, chose the studio experience for exactly that reason.
“The studio created a relaxed ‘home from home’ feeling where we felt really relaxed and comfortable, but with the benefit of lovely natural lighting which made our photos turn out amazing. It was also lovely that being in the studio you knew which poses and placements to put us in so that you could get the pictures we wanted whilst keeping Juliet entertained and Patrick comfy & settled” - Jessica
Why choose a studio session?
Consistent, professional lighting for flawless images.
A cozy, styled space—no need to prepare your home.
A dedicated environment – all you have to do is show up!
Studio sessions are ideal if you love the idea of soft, artistic images with a polished finish.
So, Which is Right for You?
Ultimately, it comes down to your preferences and what feels best for your family.
Whether you’re drawn to the warmth of home or the elegance of the studio, both options will result in beautiful memories.
Can’t decide?
Some families opt for a mix—capturing those fresh first days at home and then a milestone session in the studio later on! (which works so well if you’re part of The Keepsake Club)
